RSE and PSHE
Back“I have come in order that you might have life—life in all its fullness.” – John 10:10
We learn how to value ourselves and others, build healthy and respectful relationships, and make choices that help us live well and flourish as individuals and as part of our community.
At St Bernadette Primary School, our RSE and PSHE curriculum equips pupils with the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive as confident, responsible and healthy individuals. It supports the development of the whole child by promoting wellbeing, positive relationships, and active citizenship, while helping pupils understand how to keep themselves safe in an ever-changing world. The curriculum supports pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and enables them to develop self-awareness, resilience and a strong sense of identity.
RSE and PSHE is taught through a carefully sequenced programme based on the statutory Relationships and Health Education guidance. It is delivered through thematic units across core areas which are revisited each year, allowing pupils to build on prior learning and deepen their understanding in an age-appropriate way.
Lessons are designed to develop pupils’ confidence to discuss and reflect on important issues in a safe and respectful environment. Pupils are supported to develop the vocabulary and emotional literacy needed to express thoughts and feelings, understand the perspectives of others, and make informed choices that support their wellbeing and safety.
Our Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is rooted in Catholic teaching and the belief that every person is made in the image and likeness of God. Delivered through the Life to the Full programme by Ten:Ten, RSE is a partnership between home, school and church and is taught in a developmental way from EYFS to Year 6. It helps pupils understand themselves, build healthy relationships, and recognise the importance of respect, dignity and love in all relationships. Pupils are also taught how to stay safe, including online safety and understanding appropriate boundaries, with content delivered sensitively and in line with age and stage of development.
Rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, our RSE and PSHE curriculum promotes dignity, solidarity and the common good by encouraging pupils to value themselves and others, develop respectful relationships, and contribute positively to their communities.
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are confident, respectful and emotionally literate individuals who understand how to build healthy relationships, manage challenges and make safe, responsible choices in preparation for life beyond primary school.
