Year 1

Moving into Year One is an exciting milestone, and we work hard to make it feel like a smooth, natural next step. During the first few weeks, our classrooms continue to feel familiar and welcoming, helping children settle confidently while we gradually introduce more structure and routine. Our classrooms are safe, supportive spaces where children feel confident to try new things and learn from mistakes.

We place a strong focus on developing independence. From the very beginning, children learn to look after their belongings, organise the resources they need, and take pride in their classroom environment.

We also continue to build important physical and social skills, including developing a strong pencil grip, listening carefully, taking turns, and showing kindness through positive friendships.

Reading is at the heart of everything we do. Using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds programme, children take part in daily phonics lessons to help them blend and read words confidently. They practise reading in small groups using books matched to the sounds they know, while daily story times help to grow vocabulary and a love of reading. Quick “keep-up” sessions provide extra support straight away, ensuring every child can succeed.

Alongside reading, we place great importance on securing strong early maths skills through practical, hands-on learning. Children develop a deep understanding of numbers and build confidence with number bonds to 10, giving them the foundations they need for future mathematical learning.
