“Look how the wild flowers grow.” – Luke 12:27

Science helps us marvel at God’s creation and develop awe and respect for the natural world.

At St Bernadette Primary School, Science is recognised as a core subject that plays an essential role in understanding the world around us. Our curriculum is designed to build curiosity, secure scientific knowledge and develop the skills pupils need to ask questions, investigate, and use evidence to explain their thinking.

We aim for pupils to develop knowledge across Biology, Chemistry and Physics, alongside strong Working Scientifically skills. Learning is carefully sequenced from Early Years to Year 6 so that pupils build on prior knowledge and become increasingly confident in planning, carrying out and evaluating investigations. Pupils are taught to use scientific vocabulary accurately and to record and interpret their findings in a range of ways.

Science is taught as a discrete subject following the National Curriculum, with clear progression of knowledge and skills. Lessons are designed to promote enquiry, problem-solving and independence, giving pupils opportunities to investigate and find answers for themselves. Where appropriate, learning is linked to real-life contexts to help pupils understand the relevance of science beyond the classroom.

Pupils are taught to work safely, handle equipment responsibly and show respect for the materials they use. Enrichment opportunities such as participating in British Science Week, investigations and wider curriculum workshops support engagement and enjoyment.

Rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, our Science curriculum encourages pupils to reflect on the wonder of creation; develop a sense of stewardship for the environment; and understand the impact of scientific developments on society.

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are confident young scientists who can ask meaningful questions, carry out fair investigations and use evidence to draw clear conclusions.
