Physical Education

Back

“Let us run with determination the race that lies before us.” – Hebrews 12:1

Physical Education helps us build strength and fitness, develop determination and work together as we strive to do our best.

At St Bernadette Primary School, our Physical Education curriculum is designed to inspire a lifelong love of physical activity and sport. We aim to develop confident, resilient pupils who strive for their personal best and show respect for their own achievements and those of others. We are committed to promoting healthy minds as well as bodies, recognising the important role PE plays in pupils’ physical, social, emotional and cognitive development, as well as its positive impact on their spiritual, moral and cultural growth.

Our curriculum is inclusive and ensures all pupils have the opportunity to develop fundamental movement skills, build confidence and take part in a wide range of physical activities. Pupils are encouraged to compete with themselves and others, developing not only physical competence but also teamwork, perseverance and sportsmanship.

PE is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum using the Get Set 4 PE scheme, ensuring clear progression of skills and knowledge from Early Years to Year 6. Pupils take part in two hours of PE each week, covering a broad range of activities including games, dance, gymnastics, athletics, outdoor and adventurous activities, and swimming. Lessons are delivered by class teachers and specialist coaches to provide high-quality teaching and varied experiences.

In Key Stage 1, pupils develop fundamental movement skills and begin to apply them in simple games and activities. In Key Stage 2, pupils build on these skills, taking part in more competitive activities, developing tactics and improving performance through reflection and practice.

In addition to high-quality curriculum provision, we ensure all pupils have opportunities to take part in competitions, festivals and taster sessions, including representing the school at local borough events. Many of these opportunities are delivered through the South Hillingdon School Sports Network (SHSSN), whose work promotes Olympic and Paralympic values including self-esteem, healthy and active lifestyles, and the development of key life skills through sport. The strength of our provision is reflected in our achievement of the Platinum School Games Mark for the past eight years.

Rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, our PE curriculum promotes respect, fairness, perseverance and the importance of looking after both physical and mental wellbeing.

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils have the skills, confidence and motivation to take part in physical activity independently and to continue leading healthy, active lifestyles beyond primary school.
