“Think of the past, of the time long ago.” - Deuteronomy 32:7

History helps us learn from the past; understand the lives and choices of others; and grow in wisdom as we reflect on how people have shaped the world.

At St Bernadette School, our bespoke History curriculum aims to inspire curiosity about the past and help pupils develop a secure, coherent understanding of Britain’s history and that of the wider world. Pupils build a strong chronological framework and learn to make meaningful connections between different periods of history and their own lives today.

We encourage pupils to think critically, ask historically valid questions and understand how historical knowledge is constructed using a range of sources. Where appropriate, History is linked with Geography to deepen pupils’ understanding of place, environment and how these influence historical events and developments. Through this, pupils develop respect for different perspectives and a deeper understanding of how the past has shaped the present.

Rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, our History curriculum encourages pupils to reflect on dignity, justice and responsibility by understanding how past actions have shaped society, developing empathy and learning from injustice to promote fairness and a better future.

From the Early Years Foundation Stage, children begin to understand their world through exploration of people, place and change. In Key Stage 1, pupils develop awareness of the past and significant individuals. In Key Stage 2, pupils develop a secure chronological understanding of British and world history, learning to analyse change, continuity, cause and consequence through a range of sources.

Our curriculum is enriched by opportunities to explore local history, such as trips to the World War 2 Battle of Britain Bunker and the Roman Verulamium Museum. It supports pupils in developing a sense of identity and belonging while appreciating the diversity of human experience over time.

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are reflective learners who can think critically about the past and understand its impact on the present.
