Back“They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak.” – Acts 2:4
Learning languages helps us communicate across cultures, build understanding and recognise the dignity of all people as part of one global family.
At St Bernadette Catholic Primary School, our French curriculum in Key Stage 2 aims to develop pupils’ confidence, curiosity and enjoyment in language learning. Pupils are introduced to French through a carefully sequenced curriculum using the Language Angels scheme, which builds progressively over time and provides a strong foundation for future language study.
Pupils develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Learning is revisited regularly to support retention and ensure progress, with pupils given opportunities to use language in simple, meaningful contexts. Alongside key units for each year group, pupils also develop their understanding of French culture through learning about festivals and traditions such as Christmas, Easter, Bastille Day and La Fête des Rois.
Rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, our French curriculum promotes respect, dignity and appreciation of cultural diversity. Pupils learn to value other languages and cultures and understand the importance of communication in building relationships beyond their own community.
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils have a secure foundation in French and the confidence to continue language learning at secondary school.
