Music
Back“Sing a new song to the Lord! Sing to the Lord, all the world!” - Psalm 96:1
Music allows us to express our thoughts and emotions through singing and playing instruments, listen carefully to others and celebrate creativity and beauty in worship and performance.
At St Bernadette Primary School, our specialised Music curriculum is designed to engage and inspire pupils through listening, performing and composing. From Nursery to Year 6, pupils develop musical knowledge and skills progressively through a rich, carefully planned curriculum.
All music lessons are taught by our specialist music teacher, Mr Nicholls, ensuring high-quality teaching and consistency across the school. Lessons are bespoke and carefully planned to meet the needs of each year group, with a strong focus on developing musical understanding through practical, creative and enjoyable experiences.
Pupils develop skills in listening and appraising, composing and performing, with learning sequenced so that knowledge and skills are built on over time. This enables pupils to develop confidence and fluency in music as they progress through the school.
In Key Stage 2, pupils also develop their understanding of music theory and notation, providing a strong foundation for reading and understanding music. Whole-class instrumental teaching is provided across the school, giving pupils opportunities to learn instruments such as the recorder and ukulele.
Performance is a key feature of the curriculum. Pupils regularly perform in assemblies, class events and whole-school productions, developing confidence and enjoyment in sharing their musical learning with others.
We offer additional enrichment opportunities, including choir and music clubs, where pupils can further develop their talents and experience performing to wider audiences.
Rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, our Music curriculum promotes joy and community by encouraging pupils to express themselves, collaborate with others and contribute positively to school life.
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are confident in performing, composing and understanding music, with a secure foundation for future musical learning.
